Burn Treatment

Burns are damaged tissue caused by heat, sun, chemicals or electricity. Burns have a broad range of symptoms and treatment methods depending on cause, size, location and the type of tissue involved. Burns often occur in the kitchen as a result of hot food or drinks, or as a result of sun exposure (see Sunburns).

Minor burns include those that are superficial. MedWise Urgent Care providers can assess minor burns and create an appropriate plan to promote healing and prevent complications, like infection.

All other burns, including electrical burns and major chemical burns, need to be evaluated at an emergency department. Delaying the appropriate level of care for major burns can result in serious or fatal complications.

Rash Treatment

A rash refers to an abnormality of the skin that often presents as inflammation and irritation. The cause, duration, location, and severity of rashes vary.

Due to the wide range of presentations and causes, treatments also vary. The providers at MedWise will take an appropriate history and physical examination to diagnose the type of rash and work with the patient to create the best plan of care.

Poison Ivy Treatment

Poison ivy is a plant that releases an oil which causes an allergic reaction on the skin.

MedWise can diagnose a poison ivy rash and recommend appropriate treatment. Treatment may include antihistamines and steroids to help relieve the itching and swelling, as well as instruction on the application of wet compresses, calamine lotion or steroid cream.

*Treatment plan will vary depending on the location and severity of the rash.

How to prevent

Wear protective clothing (e.g., long sleeves and pants, boots, gloves)
Wash exposed clothing separately
Don’t burn plants or brush piles that could contain poison ivy, oak or sumac
Rinse exposed skin with rubbing alcohol or dishwashing soap and lots of water

Sunburns

A sunburn is inflamed skin that is warm or hot to the touch, caused by exposure of unprotected skin to sunlight. It takes as little as 15 minutes of ultraviolet (UV) exposure to damage skin. Sunburns increase your risk of skin cancer, so prevention is key.

MedWise providers can diagnose and treat sunburns. Treatment may include pain relievers, anti-itch medications, topical steroids, cool compresses and protecting the damaged skin from further sun exposure.

How to prevent

Stay in shade during peak UV hours 10am-4pm
Wear clothing that covers arms and legs
Use a hat to protect the face
Wear sunglasses to block rays
Avoid tanning beds
Wear broad spectrum sunscreen
Apply sunscreen every two hours and do not use after expiration date

Tick Bite Treatment

Tick bites occur when a tick attaches itself to a person’s skin to feed on their blood. In addition to the discomfort they cause, tick bites can be associated with a variety of infectious diseases. To help reduce risk of tick-borne disease, it’s important to prevent ticks from attaching and feeding for long periods of time.

If you believe you have been bitten by a tick and are concerned by your symptoms, MedWise can help with diagnosis and treatment. Please make an appointment if you have any of the symptoms indicated below within 30 days of being bitten.

Broken Bones/Fractures

A fracture is a medical term for a broken bone. Fractures are often caused from trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents, falls, or sports injuries. Symptoms of bone fractures include pain or tenderness, swelling, limitation in movement, bruising or discoloration, and a bump or deformity that isn’t usually present. MedWise offers digital X-ray services to determine the existence and location of a broken bone. Common types of bone fractures that we treat include the foot, ankle, hand, arm, elbow, finger, and toe. If a bone is broken, a MedWise provider will evaluate the type of fracture and recommend appropriate care and treatment.

Cold/Respiratory Illnesses

Symptoms like coughing, sneezing, scratchy or sore throat can be an indicator of many different types of respiratory conditions or illnesses. MedWise Urgent Care providers can evaluate respiratory symptoms to help determine the underlying cause.

Seasonal Allergy Treatment

An allergy is an immune system reaction to an allergen. An allergen is a foreign substance that can enter the body through ingestion, inhalation, injection or touch.

MedWise offers diagnosis and treatment of allergies. Our provider’s recommendation of treatment may include over-the-counter or prescription medications as well as avoidance of the allergens.

Asthma Treatment

Asthma is a chronic disease in which air passages in the lungs narrow, leading to symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath. Severe cases of asthma can be fatal and require emergency medical care.

MedWise can diagnose and treat asthma with prescription inhalers, steroids and tips on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle with asthma.

Common Cold

A cold is an upper respiratory tract infection that can be caused by many types of viruses. The symptoms of a cold typically last for around 7 to 10 days. However, you should see a healthcare provider if symptoms get worse or don’t improve in that time.

MedWise can diagnose and treat cold symptoms, including recommending appropriate over-the-counter pain relievers for fever, sore throat and headache relief.

STI

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), previously known as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are infections that can be caused by a virus, bacteria or parasites and are nearly always spread by sexual contact. Symptom presentation may vary with each STI.

MedWise offers STI testing for some of the most common causes, and results are usually available within 1-2 days. Our providers will collaborate with each patient to determine the most appropriate plan of care, as recommendations for treatment vary based on the patient’s current illness and past medical history. Local health departments also offer extensive STI testing, if needed.
